Tackling Your Custom Car Interior

Is it time to update the interior in your classic car? Whether you are bored with the current set-up or you have a project car that's undergoing its first big update, customizing your vehicle's interior is an excellent big project that will make the vehicle feel more yours and less ordinary.

Not sure how to get started? Here's how to jump into this big project:

Tacking Your Custom Car Interior

  1. Step One: Make a List. Before you or the shop you hire starts to do any interior work, the first thing you will want to do is a comprehensive inspection of all interior materials in order to determine what needs full replacement and what can be tweaked into good condition. Be thorough and be honest. Figuring out now realistically how much time and money a project will need will enable you to better plan and not have to feel blindsided by 'unexpected' expenses.
  2. Step Two: The Floor. The floor is the best place to start tackling an interior job but it's also one that can really range in difficulty. Some floors may be in great condition and require just a few minimal hole repairs before covering up with your desired carpet or similar flooring material. However, older cars and hot rods from coastal regions are likely going to need some more extensive attention to eliminate any rust that might have gone unnoticed until now.
  3. Step Three: Door Panels & Seats. Next, you'll want to start looking at the upholstery options for your custom car interior job. This will require you to match the seats with the inner door panel and so both jobs are generally done together. If you are looking for authenticity, original colors and materials will both be big factors in your final decision. Have the door panels inspected by a professional to determine whether they need to be replaced or if they just need minimal cleanup work. Like the floor, door panels can often hide rust and should be thoroughly inspected before continuing on with a custom car interior project.
  4. Step Four: Look Up. There will almost never be a project car that doesn't need a new headliner. The good news is that replacing the headliner is a fast, if sometimes frustrating, project. Additionally, the major auto manufacturers of Ford, GM, and Chrysler all have great genuine replacement options and there are an exciting number of third-party groups making their own great authentic-looking products to match any unique and custom car interior look you're going for.
