Need a Unique Hot Rod Car Project? Try the Ford Anglia
How does one choose which hot rod car or classic vehicle to restore? When it comes to older models, undoubtedly nostalgia plays a driving factor (pun intended). This is especially true when we encounter certain models during our coming-of-age years. Take for example J.K. Rowling, author of the best-selling Harry Potter series, and her fascination with the Ford Anglia. If you've read or seen the film version with your kids, then you might remember the bird's egg blue Ford Anglia as the flying car owned by the protagonist's best friend's family. In interviews, J.K. Rowling has noted that choice of this model was deliberate as it was reminiscent of the teal blue Ford Anglia one of her friend's had when she was a teenager. With that car, she and her friend could easily escape the still and quiet of the countryside and explore the excitement of Bristol, dreaming up new adventures and possibilities. Perhaps you have your own coming of age memories set in a special-to-you vehicle?
But back to the Ford Anglia! The most beloved and memorable fourth generation of the model first launched in the UK in 1959. That version of the Ford Anglia boasted an exciting design that was well ahead of its time and colors never before seen. With a sweeping nose line, a full-width slanted chrome grille, and functional rear fins, this was a vehicle that very much took its design cues from bulbous American cars. However, even the boldest of United States hot rods didn't come from the factory with the color choices available for the 1959 Ford Anglia. UK car buyers could opt for colors like primrose yellow and light green with attractive two-tone combination offerings.
Also new for this generation of Ford Anglia was the engine. Inside the engine compartment of this model was a more powerful 997 cc overhead valve straight-four with an oversquare bore. While this wasn't an engine that was going to win any races, it was one that offered significant acceleration and power improvements over its predecessors. Additionally, the large engine compartment of this model made it easier for enthusiasts to customize to create their own brawny yet handsome hot rod car.
In fact, for many hot rod car restorations and classic car customizations, one of the primary jobs we recommend is either an engine rebuild or, in some cases, replacement. Note that there are some classic cars and hot rods for which any replacement engine will destroy its value. On the other hand, if you want to enjoy a lot of mileage on your classic hot rod restoration, an engine replacement is often more desirable. Talk with an expert before making any decisions.
