American Graffiti: A Look Back at Some First Class Cars

There are classic films and then there are classic films. "American Graffiti" is one such film, especially when it comes to us lovers of hot rods and first class cars. "American Graffiti" came out in 1973, but its story took place in and is all about the decade before:1962. Through a series of relatable vignettes, the film tells a coming-of-age story of a group of teenagers and their adventures over the course of one evening in Modesto, California. But while the coming-of-age story is forefront, this film is also one about cars and car culture. So, if you are just getting into hot rods and the restoration of first class cars, then this blog post is certainly required reading. Just take a look at these favorites of ours that played a role in the cult classic:

"American Graffiti": Our Favorite Featured First Class Cars

  • '55 Chevy Sport Coupe. As good as the Deuce was, it could not beat the other hot rod in this film: Character Bob Falfa's '55 Chevy Sport Coupe. This beast of a vehicle was all power and muscle and, in that era, the latest of hot rods. When it came to drag racing, the older Ford didn't stand a chance. But this car wasn't just a turning point for the film's character, the model itself was a major turning point for the Chevy automotive company itself. This was a model that really offered style and power to compete with Ford and take Chevy to new heights.
  • '32 Deuce Coupe. Driven by John Milner, a flashy character looked up to as the hot rod legend of the Modesto streets, this car epitomized what was loved about the scene. It's big with an exposed engine that was put in there for its extreme performance capabilities. Milner's '32 Deuce Coupe also uniquely boasted a bright yellow paint job that really drew the eyes.
  • '58 Chevy Impala. One of the characters the film follows is Terry "The Toad" Fields, who at the onset, is clearly set out to be a bit of a dork. But all that changes when he's handed the keys to a '58 Chevy Impala that changes the entire course of his night and personality. Which is exactly what great hot rods do. The Chevy Impala was first released in 1956 as a concept car and it would later become one of the most beloved of cars. It was built for speed with a low and wide body, sloping roof, and sculpted fenders and tailfins designed to catch the eye. All of the first generation Chevy Impalas remain a highly desirable find for classic car enthusiasts.
